Honeyvilles kidney beans are CRAP
Just opened them up tonight. Esthetically the dry beans look very unapealing. They are not healthy looking beans and it looks like someone ran over the bag, literally. There are TONS of spilt and cracked beans with the skins peeling off. A lot of the beans are cracked all the way through like they were physically crushed. I'm cooking a pot right now and all the cracked ones are exploded and mushy while the rest are still hard in the center, so I have a half pot of over cooked and exploded beans and a half pot of under cooked beans with a firm center. These are the type of beans I would definitely pass on these at a grocery store. Dang, and I payed grocery store prices for 50 lbs of them too. :confused_ma:
I've had it with honeyville. Their products suck compared to Walton Feed and it ends up costing more. The only thing they got is a quick turn around at the expense of quality. I should have learned my lesson with their O2 absorbers. If you haven't bought those yet, don't. :banghead: |

Re: Honeyvilles kidney beans are CRAP
RC,what is your gripe with their o2 absorbers? Seems cheap to me for 500cc absorbers.

Re: Honeyvilles kidney beans are CRAP
Thanks for the report. Honeyville's white grits and corn meal, and steel cut oats are very good quality, but I buy my beans locally, so I never tried their beans.
I wonder whether Honeyville or UPS crushed them. Darn shame though. Some beans would be ok smashed up because we like a thick bean soup, but not kidney beans. |
Re: Honeyvilles kidney beans are CRAP
RC,I read somewhere that the latest version of 02 absorbers are much smaller than the older style. Take that as a FWIW.
I just did some buckets today and used 1 per vacuum sealed bag, three bags per bucket, then 3 absorbers into the bucket and lid added. I will let you know if it creates a good seal or not. Now,about your beans. You may be able to make a bean flour from the crummy ones if you are interested in bothering with it.One of our posters has made bread and thickened soup with bean flour and is very impressed with the results. If I find something that doesnt, and I have beans too,I will report back. The sugar, flour and cornmeal and split peas all look real good, have a few other items left to pack. Sorry to hear you got butchered by them, that just isnt right. |
